The first thing I have to mention is the presentation. I am a big fan of the way the whole Backyard series of games looks and this one is no different. They do all share a similar art style, but I feel that Backyard Baseball 2001 has more chunky and well defined kids and characters and it gives the game a lot more personality. Also while this is a game about kids playing baseball, it does actually have the MLB license so that is really cool and makes the game even more fun. They have the likenesses of many players, but it in kid form so that is awesome.
Backyard Baseball 2001 is a game I had a lot of fun with. Is this the definitive Backyard Baseball game? I actually think that I would say that this is where the series peaked. Even though games would be released for the next decade on different systems. It is Backyard Baseball 2001 that people seem to most fondly remember. If you are bored of games like MLB The Show and want a fun baseball game, you do not get much more fun than this.

Nelson: OK, but Kuiper and Krukow are no slouches, and they really bring what MVP Baseball needed from them, which was a professional booth that sounded like a real game being played on television, while not being boring, or repetitive, or annoying. And they succeed at that. Which kind of makes me realize that the conclusion we can draw from this is that Backyard Baseball 2001 and MVP Baseball 2005 set out to do different things. Backyard Baseball wanted to make a Little League baseball game that celebrated the fun of going to the sandlot with your friends on a summer day, picking teams, and having a good time, and MVP Baseball wanted to make the best MLB experience that they could. And both games knocked it out of the park.

Now we have a world-class facility in our back yard, where playing the game is still fun, but, like us, a little bit more refined. Teams are registering now for the fourth annual summer golf croquet league, which begins on July 31, and you can practice for free this Saturday and July 28. Last year, 24 teams of players from age 8 to 87 signed up.

So welcome to the White House. It's an honorfor me to welcome you here. And I'm doing just that. Obviously, you metour new Surgeon General, Rich Carmona. Rich is a -- he's a piece ofwork. (Laughter.) He'll do a fabulous job in that incredibly importantposition. Rosario is the Treasurer of theUnited States. (Applause.) Hector Barreto is the Small BusinessAdministrator. I appreciate you coming, Hector. (Applause.) These are people I'veappointed. These are part of the diversity of our administration. I'mglad they're here so I can herald their -- their accomplishment andtheir service to the country. Everybody has got to have a good lawyer -- (laughter) --particularly me. Mi abogado es un Tejano , Al Gonzalez, my goodfriend. (Applause.) Our military is -- the Hispanic population in our country hasserved disproportionately in our military. The Hispanic populationsteps up when the country says, we need service. And they do. Theyhave throughout our history. Today we've got with us Major GeneralChris Cortez of the United States Marine Corps. (Applause.) I've gotgreat confidence in our military. I've got confidence in our troops.I'll talk a little bit about that in a second, but, General, thanks forcoming. I appreciate my friend Emilio Estefan, who is the producer of thisoutfit. (Applause.) You want to talk about a cool guy. (Laughter.) We happen to have Miss Universe with us today, from Panama. Thankyou for coming, Miss Universe. (Applause.) And I see my fried Raulfrom Texas is sitting next to you. (Laughter.) He's probably claiminghe should have that seat because he's from Panama and a Texan.(Laughter.) I suspect it's for other reasons, but nevertheless.(Laughter.) As you probably know, as the Surgeon General mentioned, I'm abaseball fan. I love baseball; some of the best years of my life werewatching the mighty Rangers. And we've got a couple of mighty Rangershere with us. I saw one guy grow up from a 19-year-old kid who's oneof the greats of all time, and that's Pudge Rodriguez. I want to thankyou for coming, Pudge. (Applause.) And my daughters used to love to come to the game, and they fell inlove early in life with Rafael Palmeiro. (Laughter and applause.) AndI want to thank you all for bringing your families -- yes, mira, thanks for coming, guys. Hi, Lynn, how are you doing? Thanks forcoming, Rosa. (Applause.) I want to thank Nomar Garciaparra from the Red Sox for coming.Nomar, thanks for being here. (Applause.) Nomar, when we had thefirst T-ball game at the White House, was there. And one of the thingswe're trying to do is use our backyard to promote baseball. And we hadthese kids come, and Nomar was here to help kick that off. I'm sohonored you came. I appreciate Octavio Dotel from the Houston Astros. Octavio, goodto see you. (Applause.) Nelson Figueroa; donde esta Nelson? Nelson, thank you for coming. (Applause.) These are the current players. These guys are stars, and potentialHall of Famers. But we're also really fortunate to have some Hall ofFamers with us, people who've actually done what these players aredoing. It is such an honor to have four Hall of Famers, starting with RodCarew -- man, that guy could hit. (Applause.) I appreciate youcoming, Rod. (Applause.) Tony Perez. (Applause.) Luis Aparicio.(Applause.) Yes. Y por fin, Juan Marichal. (Applause.) I'm reallyglad you all are here. You brighten my day. (Laughter.) Thanks forcoming. One of my jobs as well is to make sure our bench is strong. I'venamed a fantastic Hispanic American to the bench, a young guy namedMiguel Estrada. I named him to one of the highest courts possible, tothe D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. It's an incredibly importantappointment. He's well qualified. He is very smart. He came to ourcountry from El Salvador, he couldn't speak English. He's now beenpicked, amongst all the candidates, to take on this highest of highpositions in the bench. He's having trouble in the United StatesSenate. There are some senators -- certainly not Senator Hatch, who isone of his strongest advocates -- there are senators who are payingpolitics with this good man's nomination. There are senators who wouldrather not give him the benefit of the doubt; senators looking for areason to defeat him, as opposed to looking for a reason to herald hisintelligence, his capabilities, his talent. I strongly object to theway this man is going to be treated in the Senate. I urge the Senateto confirm the nomination of Miguel Estrada. (Applause.) I talked about our military. The reason we're talking about ourmilitary these days is because we're at war, and we're at war forprecisely the reason why we're here. We're at war because we lovefreedom. We love the fact that people are free in America, free toworship an Almighty any way you see fit, free to come to this countrywith a dream and realize the dream, free to express your opinion, freeto -- if you happen to be in the press, to write anything you want towrite. That's freedom, and that's what we love. And it's hard to believe, but there's an enemy which hates freedom, and hates us as a result of our embrace of freedom. And so therefore,we're at war, we're at war, and we're still at war. We're still atrisk here in America. We're at risk because there's some enemies stilllurking around out there. This is a different kind of war, as the General would tell you. Inthe old days, you could destroy the person's tanks, or airplanes, orships, and be making progress. But these people don't have tanks. They don't have ships. They hide in caves and send youngsters to theirsuicidal death. And see, so long as we embrace the diversity and freedom of ourcountry -- which we will always do -- and so long as they'relurking out there, we're at war. But make no mistake, sin dudavenceremos. There's no doubt about it. (Applause.) We will win, because of what we love. We will win because we'redetermined and strong. We will win because we're a nation which holdsvalues dear to our heart. And we refuse to be intimidated by anybody,at any place, at any time. We will win because we want to uphold ourduty and obligation to leave America intact and free, so futuregenerations of people, Hispanic or otherwise, can realize dreams, cansucceed, can realize their God-given talents. That's what this is allabout. And so I want to thank you for coming to honor this month, but Iwant to assure you that this great nation will lead the world to bemore free. And we've got some difficult tasks at hand. Not only we must chasedown the al Qaeda one by one, which we continue to do to this very day,but we've also got to deal with threats that are real. And I gave aspeech to the nation the other day to discuss those threats in soberterms, to talk about the realities of the world in which we live. It used to be in this great country we had two oceans protectingus, and if somebody had a problem across the sea, we might help them orwe might not. Today, these oceans -- the fact that the oceans nolonger protect us mean that the battleground is here. So this greatcountry will be deliberate, we will rally other nations, we will giveother people a chance to deal with Iraq, for example. The U.N., the United Nations now has a chance, Mr. Ambassador. Asa member of the Security Council, I'm confident your nation will joinus to -- to send a clear message that this man must disarm before hehurts America or anybody else. And he has to make a choice. We're apatient nation. He's got a choice to make. His choice is, he must dowhat he said he was going to do. He said he wasn't going to haveweapons of mass destruction, that's what we expect. We take a man forhis word. But if he doesn't disarm and if the United Nations won't act, forthe sake of our freedom we will lead other countries that love freedomas much as we do and disarm him. We owe it to our children. We lovepeace in this country and when we see threats to peace, we will dealwith them in a deliberate, calm, logical and, if need be, forcefulway. And as we work to make America a more secure place and a saferplace, we've got to make it a better place, too. And that means makingsure everybody gets a good education in our country, everybody. We passed a really good education bill. I want to share the spiritof the bill, because I believe it speaks to the month we'recelebrating. It says that every child can learn. That's the firstthing. See, it starts with the attitude that if -- if there are lowexpectations, if perhaps a school district or people think that becausea parent doesn't speak English as a first language, therefore a certainchild may not be able to learn, we're going to challenge that.(Applause.) See, when you have low standards, you're liable to get badresults. That's what I have called the soft bigotry of lowexpectations. We have challenged that soft bigotry. We say in thiscountry every child can learn -- every child -- not just some, not aselect few, not those who may live in the nice suburban districts --but every child can learn. And then it says that in return for receiving federal money, wewant to know. You see, in return for receiving federal money, weexpect local districts and states to show us whether or not each childis learning. And when we find the fact that some children are not learning, wemust correct problems early, before it's too late. Everybody counts inAmerica. Each child matters in this country. To make sure we have abetter America, no child -- not one, single child -- needs be leftbehind. (Applause.) I believe this nation is strong in its diversity. We love ourfreedom. It's an incredibly great nation. And out of the evil done toour country on September the 11th, 2001, will come incredible good. That's what you must know about our nation. Out of the evil done toAmerica can come some great good. If we stay tough and firm and strong, we can achieve peace. We canachieve peace for people here at home, we can achieve peace in theworld. And by being -- by loving your neighbor just like you'd liketo be loved yourself, we can achieve a better tomorrow. We can worktogether to eradicate the pockets of hopelessness, loneliness anddespair. People can fight evil by doing some good, by putting your armaround a lost soul and saying, I love you. My fellow American, I loveyou. There is no question in my mind, because of our strength, diversity, because of the values we hold, that we will be a strongerand more compassionate and better nation. I want to thank you all for coming to celebrate this importantmonth. It is an honor for me to welcome you to the White House. Iappreciate so very much your contributions to our country. May Godbless you all. (Applause.) END 1:53 P.M. EDT Printer-Friendly Version Email this page to a friend IssuesBudget Management
