I love to read, and I'm always in the middle of a book. Buying books can get expensive quickly, which is why I've loved public libraries since I was a girl. In recent years, I've become spoiled by the experience of reading on my iPad. I find I much prefer being able to change the font, read in dark mode at night, and avoid carrying heavy books on vacation. But how do you read library books on your iPhone or iPad? Thanks to OverDrive's apps, it's easy and free. You can borrow both ebooks and audiobooks from your local library and enjoy them on your iOS device.
It's important to note that while there will be a huge range of books available for you to read, both older and current titles, some of the popular bestsellers may have a significant waiting list before you can borrow them. Also, keep in mind that you are simply borrowing an e-book, you don't own it. The book will disappear off of your device when the borrowing period (three weeks at my library) is over.
Unlike paper library books, there are never any late fees. Your borrowed book will simply disappear off of your device when your library's loan period ends, which usually lasts two or three weeks. Libby is a great way to read or listen to current, popular books without spending a dime.
There are thousands of ebooks and audiobooks, hand-selected by your library, available for reading. Explore the collection through catalog guides, subjects, featured titles, and curated lists. It's a delight to discover new books through Libby.
"I feel like I just re-found my love for the library again. This app helps re-connect with these amazing and free resources back inot reading books but also magazines. I know the library is free but I didn't know what an array they have for electronic resources. It is great and helpful."
Library: Shows all of the books, audiobooks, samples, series, and PDFs you got from the Book Store or manually added to your library. You also see your books sorted into categories, such as Want to Read, Finished, and Downloaded.
Start reading, listening or watching instantly with e-books, audiobooks, e-magazines, and streaming movies. Most titles are available online with just an internet connection and a library card. An e-reader app is required for downloading to your personal device.
All modern Kobo devices can download from the OverDrive library service directly, without the separate Libby app. To begin, turn on your Kobo and make sure it is connected to Wi-Fi. Once ready, follow the steps to borrow e-books from your public library using your Kobo device:
Your library e-book automatically returns itself once your library loan has expired. To return the book early, open the Libby app and select the Shelf option at the bottom of the screen. Then, tap on the e-book you wish to manage and select Return Early. If you have a Nook device and used the OverDrive website, you can revisit the website and log in using your library card. Once signed in, go to the My Account section and pick Loans. From here, you can choose to return any of your books early.
If you are having trouble with obtaining an e-book from the OverDrive service, we recommend you contact your local public library and speak to a reference librarian. Most librarians are familiar with the process of obtaining digital books. Some libraries may not host their collections with OverDrive. If this is the case, a librarian can direct you to the correct location for obtaining books. Additionally, if you do not have a library card, a librarian can help you with the process.
Based on the interests you indicate, library staff will identify 3-6 books (or audiobooks!) for you and will place them on hold. Your personalized book picks will be placed on hold in your account within one week after you submit this form. Expect an email when the materials are ready, and you will have one week ... And last but not least, having a catalog of the books you own can help if you ever need to rebuild your library due to some unforeseen disaster. Rather than having to rely on memory, keeping a log of the books you own can ensure you remember exactly which books you had so you can try to find them again (and this is a great way to keep records for insurance purposes as well!).
And when entering the book, you can add tags, notes, set a star rating, or even add it to a group (which I like to do for book series so all the books show up together in the catalog). Adding this data makes your library easily searchable, and you can find books alphabetically by title/author, by published date, by tag, or a variety of other sorting methods.
You may also use our library catalog to borrow Axis 360 titles. Be sure to check out the Axis 360 version of the ebook if you plan to use the Axis 360 app. You may also use the Axis 360 website to access your checkouts.
The default lending period is 21 days. You can adjust the checkout time from 2 to 21 days if you check out Axis 360 titles from our library catalog. During the checkout process, you will be presented with this option.
